Why Singapore?

Singapore is known as the gateway to the Asian market. It is the third largest financial centre in the world, after London and New York, with some 1,200 financial institutions, including banking industry leaders, major insurance companies and Canadian retirement funds.

Singapore is one of the largest foreign direct investment destinations for Canadian companies in Southeast Asia and its business-friendly environment is particularly favourable for fintechs.

Singapore offers the compelling mix of a supportive government, a well-established financial sector, excellent physical and digital infrastructure, a large pool of IT specialists, and a vibrant ecosystem of investors and advisers. It is a clear starting point for company looking to expand into Southeast Asia.

Singapore FinTech landscape:

  • 40+ Innovation labs
  • 500+ FinTech startups
  • S$500M Record-high FinTech investment in 2018

The financial sector is an integral part of Singapore’s ambition to be a smart nation. In August 2019, the Monetary Authority of Singapore launched Sandbox Express to provide firms with a faster option to test innovative financial products and services in the market.

Looking back at 2018 Singapore trade mission

In 2018, the Singapore trade mission provided unparalleled opportunities to participants who could not only attend the Singapore FinTech Festival, but also take advantage of targeted meetings with key players in the international financial and technology sectors: “It was Squares Union’s second fintech mission with the Chamber, and it was a success. We had three objectives: find payment partners, set up a subsidiary in Singapore and meet with a major potential investor in Asia. It was a busy mission that allowed us to achieve our objectives.” – Freddy Noumeyi, Vice President, Operations at Squares Union

“It was a fantastic experience. One of Singapore’s characteristics is its cultural mix between Asia and America. The most important thing was to be able to align our vision with this market’s. There is no doubt that the mission was a stepping stone to the successful expansion of our company.” – Louis Cléroux, President and Chief Executive Officer of Timechain
